2024 Guangdong Medical Science Week: China-Singapore Medical Science and Technology Forum Concluded Successfully in Guangzhou

On the afternoon of May 16, 2024, a glittering event was held in Guangzhou in the medical field - the Guangdong Medical Science Week: China-Singapore Medical Science and Technology Forum. Organized by the Guangdong Medical Association and co-organized by the Guangdong Academy of Medical Sciences (GAMS), the Guangdong Theranostic Assistance Group, and the Medicine Advances, the Forum aims to deepen international cooperation and exchanges in the field of medicine, to share cutting-edge medical innovations, and to explore new directions in the development of medicine. CHNG Wee Joo, the Vice President of the National University of Singapore (NUS), Academician LlM Chwee Teck, Prof. ZHANG Yong Liang, Prof. SHI Jia Hai, and Prof. SIM Zhi Min from NUS, YU Xueqing, President of GAMS (Guangdong Provincial People's Hospital, GPPH) and Editor-in-Chief of Medicine AdvancesQIU Xianqing, President of Tsinghua University Press (TUP), Prof. LI Haitao, Director of Department of Basic Medical Sciences at Tsinghua University (DBMS, TU), Prof. CHEN Yang from Southeast University (SU), Prof. LIAO Ning, Prof. JIANG Feizhou, Prof. LIANG Huiying, Prof. FEI Jifeng, and Prof. GUAN Haixia from GAMS (GPPH), Prof. CHENG Weibin from Guangdong Second Provincial General Hospital (GSPGH), Prof. WANG Peng from Heyuan People’s Hospital (HPH), Dr. SUN Yu, Deputy General Editor of TUP, and Director of the Medicine Advances Editorial Office, and more than 200 people attended the conference.

At the opening ceremony of the forum, hosted by Dr. SUN Yu, Deputy General Editor of TUP, Prof. YU Xueqing, President of GAMS, firstly delivered a warm speech. He emphasized the importance of scientific and technological innovation in the field of health and wellness over the modernization of hospitals and the development of the health industry, and pointed out the far-reaching significance of cooperation in medical sci-tech exchanges with China, given Singapore's position as a biomedical science center in Asia. Prof. YU said that this forum aims to build a platform for medical and humanistic exchanges in the Asia-Pacific region, to promote in-depth cooperation between the two countries in the field of medicine, and to jointly promote the progress of medical science and technology.

QIU Xianqing, President of TUP, expressed his sincere thanks to the participating leaders and experts and congratulated the success of the forum. He emphasized that TUP’s unwavering commitment to academic publishing in the field of medicine, adhering to the mission of “disseminating advanced culture and promoting social progress”. Looking ahead, heagerly anticipated expanded colllaboration with NUS in the medical field, envisioning a joint endeavor that  would contribute to the flourishing of medical sciences on a global scale.

CHNG Wee Joo, Vice President of NUS, spoke highly of the forum and noted that NUS will participate in the cooperation and exchanges in the field of global medicine, and jointly promote the development of the medical career. "Through the contact and exchanges of this forum, we hope to further promote the cooperative relationship between the two sides. We look forward to taking the opportunity of the international development and cooperation of journals, and jointly publishing high-level scientific research results through the platform of Medicine Advances to promote exchanges and cooperation in the international medical community. At the same time, we also look forward to actively participating in international academic conferences, conducting cooperative research and project cooperation, and jointly promoting the development of medical science. We hope that through these forms of cooperation, we can open a new chapter in the field of medicine and start a new journey. We look forward to deeper practical promotion, so that the results of cooperation can truly benefit the majority of patients and make greater contributions to the health of mankind." CHNG Wee Joo said in the forum.

The appointment ceremony for editorial board members was also held during the forum, in which Prof. QIU Xianqing, President of TUP, and Prof. LIANG Huiying, Executive Editor-in-Chief of Medicine Advances, handed over certificates of Associate Editors of Medicine Advances to Prof. LIM Chwee Teck and Prof. ZHANG Yong Liang from NUS.

Medicine Advances Workstation, as one of the innovative initiatives in 2024, was inaugurated during this forum. QIU Xianqing, President of TUP, and LIANG Huiying, Executive Editor-in-Chief of Medicine Advancesgave the journal’workstation plaque to Prof. CHENG Weibin from GSPGH and Prof. WANG Peng from HPH.

In the following session, hosted by Prof. Liang Huiying and Prof. Liao Ning from GAMS (GPPH), Lim Chwee Teck from NUS, presented the report “Advancing Health Through Technological Innovation and AI”. The report stressed the importance of cooperation and exchanges among countries in the field of healthcare against the backdrop of globalization and technological convergence, and provided a direction for building a healthier and more harmonious global society. Prof. LI Haitao, Director of DBMS, TU, made the report “Role of Histone Lactylation in Breast Cancer Metastasis”, which underscored epigenetics in medical research and proposed a new strategy to reduce the mortality rate of breast cancer patients by intervening in this process.

During the session co-chaired by Prof. CHENG Weibin from GSPGH and Prof. LIANG Huiying from GAMS (GPPH), Prof. ZHANG Yong Liang from NUS delivered the report “Exploring the Impact of DUSP10 Therapy Combined with Anti-PD-L1 Therapy on Colorectal Cancer”. This discovery not only brings new hope to colorectal cancer treatment, but also is expected to provide patients with more efficient and personalized treatment options. In his report, he expounded on the mechanism of this combination therapy, and emphasized its potential to improve the therapeutic efficacy, reduce the side effects, and improve the quality of life of patients. Prof. CHEN Yang from SU gave a report on “Algorithms and Applications of Task-driven Intelligent X-ray Imaging”. Based on deep learning and image processing, the algorithm can automatically adjust parameters according to different clinical needs, to realize accurate and efficient X-ray imaging. Through experimental data, Prof. CHEN Yang demonstrated the potential of the algorithm in improving the accuracy of lesion detection and optimizing the imaging time, and emphasized the prospect of its wide application in future medical imaging diagnosis, and called for interdisciplinary cooperation to promote the development of medical imaging technology.

During the session co-chaired by Prof. FEI Jifeng and Prof. GUAN Haixia from GAMS (GPPH), Prof. SHI Jia Hai from NUS presented the report “Bamboo shark: a model for research and translation on cartilaginous fish”. Through the unique discovery of sharks, he showed how scientific research can provide new insights for medical translation and emphasized the importance of interdisciplinary cooperation and innovation. Finally, Prof. SIM Zhi Min from NUS delivered the report “Global Cooperation in Healthcare for the Shared Future”, which highlighted international healthcare cooperation and provided a direction for building a healthy and harmonious world in the future.

He noted that the quality of medical education must be continuously improved with the continuous advancement of medical technology and the increasing needs of patients.
